When I was trying to come up with a catchy name for my new blog, I wanted something short, cool sounding and obscure. The name Arkenstone came to me as I neared the final chapters of Tolkien's book, The Hobbit. I decided to read the book in preparation for the Peter Jackson trilogy of films, the first is scheduled for release in December of this year The Hobbit movie trailer.
The Arkenstone is a precious gem, discovered by an ancestor of Thorin the dwarf, one of the principle characters in Tolkien's story. The Arkenstone was shaped by the Dwarves and later lost when the dragon, Smaug, captured the mountain from the Dwarves.
So I thought... hmmm, Arkenstone! This is a cool name that is short, easy to remember and after the release of the movies, I'm hoping will become as popular as the term Mithril or the Mirror of Galadriel, which any Lord of the Rings geek can easily define, describe and many whom can give you the complete origins and history of these elements in agonizing detail. My thinking is that being somewhat new to this whole blogging culture, it might help boost exposure to find a title name for my blog that was not yet a mainstream term, but in time would gain recognition as Hollywood would surely do it's job in bringing the Arkenstone to life on the big screen. I also know enough about the blogoshere community that the clever interweaving usage of key words and search engine optimization (SEO) strategies which an experienced blogger can expertly apply can boost readership exponentially in short time.
I have actually loaded this post with a number of key words that I'm hoping Google will love: Tolkien, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson, and now Arkenstone. I contribute regularly to another blog, The Whine Press, which is more random in terms of content. I started this blog, Arkenstone, as a means to promote my award winning screenplay, Martin Eden and to talk about writing. Martin Eden, in it's script form is beginning to attract attention from some of Hollywood's heavy hitters. I hesitate to mention any names at this early stage as I would think it unprofessional at this point, at least until I secure an option deal. I never dreamed my script would get this far and I'm having a blast being my own PR and marketing manager. After all, I have nothing to lose and much to gain when my efforts pay off. In my next post I will share the path that I took in getting some notice from these Hollywood exec's. I will share now that first and foremost, you need to write a damn good script, preferably a story that you are very passionate about, the way I was with ME. Incidentally, "ME" has become my acronym for Martin Eden. I always wonder if that's what the author Jack London was doing...
